Even in modern Wales, between Samhain and Twelfth Night, the ancient Mari Lwyd horse spirit & her entourage may just knock upon your door and challenge you to a rhyming battle! She already has her own traditional song, referenced by the guitar part in this new tune, but I was helpless to resist the folkore and to attempt to write my own!
Ghostly white, she comes by night
Open wide the door
Bells gaily ringing, laughter and singing
Old misfortune, come no more
Welcome Mari Lwyd
Best the mare in a game of rhymes
(Open your door)
Whimsy born of ancient times
(Open your door)
Best the beast, or she'll drink her fill
(Open your door)
Wake your wit and show your skill
(Open your door)
Drums and fiddles in the snow
(Open your door)
In song we come, in song we go
(Open your door)
Sing to earn your bread and beer
(Open your door)
Hearth fire feast and winter cheer
(Open your door)
Comes the dusk and comes the song
Bring a light; the night is long
Spar with words and be ye blest
Fill her cup and earn your winter's rest
Ghostly white, she comes by night
Open wide the door
Bells gaily ringing, laughter and singing
Old misfortune, come no more
Welcome Mari Lwyd
Comes the Gray Mare with the snow
(Open your door)
Bold she comes and glad she'll go
(Open your door)
Bells in winter sweetly ring
(Open your door)
Good fortune find us all in spring
(Open your door)
Sing to earn your beer and bread
(Open your door)
She brings good luck, I've heard it said
(Open your door)
Bless her now, be blest in turn
(Open your door)
Ale that's given, ale that's earned
Welcome now the winter's queen
of nightmare mien and ancient need
Let her in and be ye blest
Mighty spirit, come and take your rest!
Ghostly white, she comes by night
Open wide the door
Bells gaily ringing, laughter and singing
Old misfortune, come no more
Welcome Mari Lwyd
(Open your door)
(Come, and open up your door!)

left the workaday world behind to sing songs and change lives. Tucker is the voice of lore at the campfire and the sharp laughter of modern myth. With one hand anchored in her art and the other held out to us, she is songs and stories, community and wit....more
I would happily stroll the green with the Professor if the opportunity came. So very posh, and yet so very silly. Who wouldn't love a chap like this? He inspires me to parasol-rap of my own. <3 S. J. Tucker
Ginger (they, them) is my favorite recording engineer, bandmate, soulmate, and straight-up genius. This Cocoon is their first solo release. Favorite track: "Made It Home". I sang backup on "Masks" S. J. Tucker
Dogwood is the real deal: mythology, wit, whimsy, wisdom, and outstanding musical chops. Do please eat the pomegranate seeds so that you can stay a while and listen. S. J. Tucker
