Moving and heartbreaking, and absolutely beautiful. The idea of a Sea Witch that is not evil, but is actually concerned about the Little Mermaid is also brilliant.

about
Sooj's musical retelling of Andersen's original Little Mermaid story (and what might have happened after), this time from the Sea Witch's point of view.
lyrics
She came to find me, little scion of the nerve,
with sea foam seeded innocence, all milkiness and verve
and a heart like a lion hell bent on what it wanted,
regardless of the hell to pay.
I warned her that the surface was no fairy tale come true,
that love can do more damage than you think that it can do,
but she bade me name my price, and so
I left her mute and haunted,
winsome in the light of day.
Where the ocean meets the land,
grit your teeth and stand upon
your own two feet, my darling.
Do take care.
Guard your precious heart
in the verdant world apart if you're
gonna leave the water for the air.
I kept a distant eye on the new life she was building,
betting on a love who seemed unhearing and unyielding,
but her will, like a lion, was too wild for backing down
or for sensing the time to take wing.
When her sisters came to see me with their
wide and tearful eyes,
the best that I could offer was a blade for her to try
for stopping the heart that would never bow down
to a siren who could not sing.
This is why, my minnow,
I've been loath to let you go.
Where the ocean meets the land,
grit your teeth and stand upon
your own two feet, my darling.
Do take care.
Guard your precious heart in
the verdant world apart if you're
gonna leave the water for the air.
Every word is true.
You'll do what you have to do.
I know your spirit cannot stay
inside its shell,
but I'll be watching from the deep
when you wake and as you sleep.
Take the knife before you leave
and use it well.

“Without our songs and stories, we are nothing.” S. J. Tucker has been captain of her own music career since 2004, when she
left the workaday world behind to sing songs and change lives. Tucker is the voice of lore at the campfire and the sharp laughter of modern myth. With one hand anchored in her art and the other held out to us, she is songs and stories, community and wit....more
I would happily stroll the green with the Professor if the opportunity came. So very posh, and yet so very silly. Who wouldn't love a chap like this? He inspires me to parasol-rap of my own. <3 S. J. Tucker
Ginger (they, them) is my favorite recording engineer, bandmate, soulmate, and straight-up genius. This Cocoon is their first solo release. Favorite track: "Made It Home". I sang backup on "Masks" S. J. Tucker
Dogwood is the real deal: mythology, wit, whimsy, wisdom, and outstanding musical chops. Do please eat the pomegranate seeds so that you can stay a while and listen. S. J. Tucker

This is exactly the album that I need right now. Especially Warlock's Oath and Fang into Vein. Of course, the entire album is glorious spooky goodness. I'm in love. <3 Sai Chi
